The Department of Mathematics offers a program of study designed to meet the needs of all students. The new mathematics standards have been adopted. Objectives are: students should learn to value mathematics, learn to communicate mathematically, become confident of their abilities, and become mathematical problem solvers. The following sequence of courses outlines the four year math program.

#### PRE-ALGEBRA

Grade 9

Elective

Pre-Algebra provides the foundation in algebra, geometry and problem solving that is needed for success in more advanced courses. Topics will cover a broad range of mathematics with strong emphasis on fundamentals and number sense. It expands the amount of time the student has to make transition from informal explorations of algebraic concepts to more abstract ways of thinking. It features the algebra pre requisites which students need to understand key concepts and learn skills in order to be successful in mathematics.

#### ALGEBRA I

Grades 9 /10

Required

1 Credit

Prerequisite: Placement based on records, placement examination

and recommendation

In this course, standard Algebra I, skills are introduced and developed. Topics include linear equations and inequalities, functions, compound sentences absolute value equations and inequalities, slope and equations of lines, systems of equations and inequalities, exponents, radicals and polynomials. A scientific calculator may be used.

#### ALGEBRA I (HONORS)

Grade 9

Prerequisite: Placement based on records, placement examination

and recommendation

This course is designed for mathematically gifted and highly motivated students. The same material as in Algebra I is covered but in greater depth and at a faster pace. Students work more difficult problems and enrichment points are expected. Students participate in the annual Mathematics Competition. Performance and motivation are evaluated before a recommendation is made.

#### GEOMETRY

Grades 9, 10, 11

Required

Prerequisite: Algebra I and recommendation

This course stresses the basic structure of geometry and integrates these concepts with concepts of algebra already mastered. Proficiency in developing problem solving and critical thinking skills is an integral part of this course.

#### GEOMETRY (HONORS)

Grades 9/10

Prerequisite: Algebra I and recommendation

This course is designed for mathematically gifted and highly motivated students. The same materials as in Geometry is covered but in greater depth and at a faster pace. Students work more difficult problems and enrichment points are expected. Students participate in the annual Mathematics Competition. Performance and motivation are evaluated before a recommendation is made.

#### ALGEBRA II

Grades 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite: Algebra I, Geometry and recommendation

The goals of this course are to prepare students to work with more advanced mathematics and to give them the basic tools to apply Algebra I in other courses of study. It is an expansion of the topics mastered in Algebra I along with applications. A TI-83 (or higher) Graphing Calculator is highly recommended.

#### ALGEBRA II (HONORS)

Grades 10/11

Prerequisite: Algebra I, Geometry and recommendation

This course is designed for mathematically gifted and highly motivated students. The same material as in Algebra II is covered but in greater depth and at a faster pace. Students participate in the annual American Mathematics Competition. Performance and motivation are evaluated before a recommendation is made.

#### TRIGONOMETRY/PRE-CALCULUS

Grades 11/12

Elective

Prerequisite: Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II and recommendations

This course is very useful to students intending to take Calculus or to enter any technical field of math or science. It is an expansion of topics mastered in Geometry and Algebra II and provides a broad background in several topics of advanced math including logarithms, trigonometry, analytic geometry, as well as critical thinking and problem solving skills. A TI-83 (or higher) Graphing Calculator is highly recommended.

#### CALCULUS

Grade 12

Elective

1 Year

1 Credit

Prerequisite: Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II / Pre-calculus and

recommendations

This course is an introductory course in Differential and Integral calculus. It is the culmination and integration of all math courses. Applications to real problems are used throughout the year. A TI-83 (or higher) Graphing Calculator is required.

#### AP CALCULUS (A/B)

Grade 12

1 Year

1 Credit

Prerequisite: Trigonometry/Pre-Calculus or recommendation

This course highlights a multirepresentational approach to Calculus. Topics covered in AP Calculus include functions, derivatives, and integrals. Concepts, results, and problems will be expressed graphically, numerically, analytically, and verbally. A TI-83 (or higher) Graphing Calculator is required. Students in this class must take the AP Calculus test at the end of the school year.

#### PRE-COLLEGE MATH

Grade 12

Elective

1 Year

1 Credit

Prerequisite: Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II

This course follows the Pre-Calculus syllabus in a somewhat less rigorous format. The course builds on the mathematics that student has already learned with emphasis placed on reading, understanding, and developing independent thinking and problem-solving skills. It is an expansion of topics mastered in Geometry and Algebra II.
