THE AOLG CAMPUS MINISTRY
MA. REGINA PATRICIA A. SIM
Campus Ministry Coordinator
The Academy of Our Lady of Guam RSM Campus Ministry continues to flourish in its mission of providing the school community with opportunities to grow and live out their faith more actively:
A core-group of 12 RSM student officers is involved in the planning and implementation of projects and activities from liturgies to service projects.
The eleven liturgies plus the various prayer services held throughout the schoolyear provide increased opportunities for students to participate as altar servers, lectors, presenters of the gifts, banner/cross bearers and greeters.  Training and rehearsals at the cathedral are held in preparation for each liturgy.
At school masses, the prayers of the faithful done in different languages makes students feel proud of their heritage and encourages respect for diversity in the community.
Retreats during Advent and Lent involve students in the planning and implementation to respond more closely to the unique needs of the classes. The Lenten Retreat is a prayerful and solemn one, challenging our students to grow and mature spiritually.
Aside from the schoolwide fund-raising campaigns to help the victims of the Asian tsunami, hurricane Katrina and mudslide victims in Leyte, Philippines, hands-on opportunities for community service to local institutions are organized quarterly. e.g.  Visit to the Mercy Care Home,   Catholic Social Services Home for the Elders Christmas Decorating and Feeding the Homeless at Kamalen Karidat.
The Operation Rice Bowl (care of Catholic Relief Services) during Lent reminds the community to PRAY, GIVE, FAST and LEARN.  Two students per day lead the noontime Lenten prayer, to remember our suffering sisters and brothers in different parts of the world.  The “rice bowl” provided to each student serves as a coin bank making their fasting meaningful. The amount saved is given to people in need.  The Theology teachers were encouraged to incorporate the ORB activities in their lessons.
Bi-monthly episodes of the “Youth Alive –Academy Edition” Radio Show has been produced and aired island-wide on KOLG 90.9 FM.  With close guidance from their adviser, the students learn prudence and responsible broadcasting.  They gain confidence in public speaking and learn to be involved and aware of the life of the Catholic Church.  Students appreciate being entrusted with the mission to proclaim about their faith in the radio shows.
The Academy students have been provided the chance to sponsor a child in poverty through the World Vision Child Sponsorship Program.  Aside from their monthly donations which support the child’s basic needs and education, the experience of relating with the sponsored child through letter writing is a rewarding experience.
The newly inaugurated Prayer Room receives visitors everyday from students and faculty members who would like to spend brief quiet moments with God during the day.
Rosary for Peace is held every Friday during lunch break

A ROOM WORTHY OF ITS NAME
By Christina Cartaciano  - February 5, 2007

“Go to your inner room, close the door, and pray to your Father…”  Matthew 6:5-6

For nearly a decade, the vacant room at the top of the Academy of Our Lady of Guam’s foyer staircase is identified as the "Prayer Room". Upon the go-signal of Sister Francis Jerome Cruz, AOLG President, the twelve junior members of the Campus Ministry/Theology class of Ms. Shine Sim put their efforts together this year.  Using recycled materials such as boxes, colorful cloths, pebbles, candles and native mats, they gave a fresh makeover to the sparsely decorated room. With its recent completion, the Prayer Room received a new look with an inviting feel. Each corner of the room is dedicated to aide students and visitors in their journey to follow Christ and find peace in themselves.
When one steps in through the door, meditation music is heard and a welcome table greets, inviting visitors to sign in the guest book.  But wait!  Don’t you take another step until those shoes have been removed!  A glance to the left shows some fancy hand-painted shoe mats with inspirational quotes from the Bible. The Welcome Corner displays a mini-waterfalls, the sight and sound of which immediately calms the senses. After signing in, one’s attention will be directed to the stained glass windows that illuminate the room with an array of colors.  These cellophane-and-poster board projects depict the liturgical seasons and scenes from Salvation History.  The canopy of stripped cloth and beads frames a comfortable area called the Reading and Reflection Corner.” Books on Mother Teresa, Pope John Paul II, “how to become a better leader” and “how to attain peace” invite visitors to browse.  Take a right turn to the Giving Corner where a beautiful set of donation baskets for charitable organizations on island serve as reminders to “put prayer into action.”  If one has a prayer intention, the Intention and Inspiration Corner allows visitors to “pray with” and “pray for” each other by sharing their intentions. And last but not the least, a “stained glass” artwork featuring The Crucifixion hangs in the center of the Prayer Room, reminding visitors to keep Christ in the center of their lives.
The Prayer Room was blessed and inaugurated last Wednesday, January 31, 2007 as part of Catholic Schools Week celebration. Since the beginning of the New Year, it has taken several class periods and many hours beyond to complete -- but the labor of love poured out has given the Academy of Our Lady of Guam a quiet space to be alone with God, a room truly worthy to be called “Prayer Room.”
