History of the Academy
.

The Academy is a fully accredited Catholic high school for young women whose curriculum provides for the holistic development not only of college-bound students but also those who are career-inclined.

Named after our Lady of Camarin, the school was founded by his Excellency, the late Bishop Appolinaris William Baumgartner, OFM Cap., and the late Sister lnez Underwood, RSM, one of the three sisters of Mercy from Belmont, North Carolina, who also established a religious community in Guam. Established September 8, 1949, the Academy became the first all girls Catholic high school. Today, with an average enrollment of 400 students, it is the sole all girls high school in Guam, and is regarded as one of the finest college preparatory high schools on island. camarin

The Academy’s history of nearly 56 years reflects a record of numerous achievements. It has consistently retained full accreditation status since the initial review. Academy students excel in both academic and athletic endeavors. Over 90% of Academy graduates choose to pursue post-secondary education, and a continuing number get accepted into prestigious colleges and universities nationally and internationally. Many alumnae have assumed top-notch professions and leadership positions in the areas of law, medicine, entrepreneurship, judgeship, public elected offices, international affairs, architecture and engineering, to name a few.

Highly regarded for its Christian-valued education, the Academy continues to strive for a holistic approach to education, achieving a fully integrated curriculum that embraces the whole well being of each student. The family members of the school community are the Academy’s greatest assets. The teachers, staff and administrators are not only professional educators, but each one seeks to mentor, nurture and serve as a role model for the students. The Academy offers numerous student services and activities that promote community, school spirit and camaraderie. Students are encouraged to fully participate in the life of the school. In addition, the Academy welcomes the parents and guardians of its students to greater participation in the educational formation of their daughters.

The Academy of Our Lady is conveniently located in the heart of Guam’s capitol, Hagatña, where it shares its campus with the Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral-Basilica. Students have access to public and private institutions in the vicinity. The Nieves Flores Public Library, the Guam Legislature Building, the Pacific Daily News Offices, the Guam Museum and the Superior Court are but a few of the numerous places of educational interest located nearby.
